How to Read Candlestick Charts Like a Pro: Complete Guide

10 min read

Candlestick charts are the foundation of technical analysis and price action trading. Understanding how to read candlestick charts gives you a significant edge in predicting market direction and timing your entries.

Anatomy of a Candlestick

Each candlestick displays four critical price points: open, high, low, and close. The body (filled or hollow) shows the range between open and close. Green or white candles indicate the close was higher than the open (bullish); red or black candles show the close was lower (bearish). Wicks or shadows extend to the high and low, revealing price rejection at those levels.

Essential Candlestick Patterns

Doji: A small body with long wicks signals indecision. When it appears at support or resistance, it often precedes reversals. The long-legged doji at trend extremes is particularly powerful.

Hammer and Hanging Man: Both have small bodies at the top with long lower wicks. Hammers at support suggest bullish reversals; hanging men at resistance suggest bearish reversals.

Engulfing Patterns: A bullish engulfing occurs when a green candle completely engulfs the previous red candle—strong buy signal. Bearish engulfing is the opposite.

Morning Star and Evening Star: Three-candle reversal patterns. Morning star (bullish) shows a small body between a large red and large green candle. Evening star (bearish) is the inverse.

Using Candlesticks in Context

Candlestick patterns work best when combined with support and resistance levels, trend direction, and volume. A hammer at a key support level is far more reliable than one in the middle of a range. Always confirm with the next candle before entering.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't trade every pattern in isolation. Avoid ignoring the broader trend. Never enter without a stop loss. Candlestick patterns are probability tools, not guarantees—use proper position sizing.
